Backcountry Beat

Backcountry Beat, February 2021

Friend —

In the halls of Congress and in state legislatures, hunting and fishing issues are reaching a fever pitch! BHA members, chapter leaders and staff are working tirelessly to keep the pressure on and hold our legislators accountable on the priorities that matter to hunters and anglers. Thank you for your work, and let’s keep the pedal to the metal!

I’m stoked to announce that the Protecting America’s Wilderness Act and Public Lands Act (H.R. 803) passed the House this past week and is moving full steam ahead to the Senate. This legislative package contains nine different bills that benefit the wild places we all value. Put together, these bills will establish 1.49 million acres of new wilderness, designate over 1,000 river miles as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and make sure that an additional 1.3 million acres remain intact for recreational use. This would not have happened without boots on the ground leadership and represents a huge potential win for backcountry outdoorsmen and women like you and me. Take action now to thank House representatives who voted YES on this pro-public lands package and shoot a note to your senators telling them to get this thing to the president’s desk!

Spring is coming up here in Montana, and I’m ready to start looking for gobblers and floating our rivers. Stay tuned for details on our Turkey Calling Contest next month, and look for more events coming down the road as the ice and COVID restrictions start to lift! In the meantime, make sure you’re checking our Take Action Center and following along with your local chapter to stay engaged on good and bad bills in your area. Your voice is absolutely essential in carrying on the great conservation legacy that was gifted to us.

Onward and upward,

Land Tawney
