The BHA Interior Alaska AFI Chapter will conduct its 1st event on Saturday, 26 September 20 coinciding with National Public Lands Day which occurs on the last Saturday in September. The event will take place in the White Mountains National Recreation Area north of Fairbanks, AK and will begin at 10 am.
Participants will enjoy an afternoon of small game hunting to include grouse, ptarmigan, and hare while exercising backcountry etiquette by removing any trash they find along the way.
Participants are free to explore the vast 1 million acre recreation area which represents less than 1/3 of a percent of the states total public land. The White Mountains can be accessed from the Steese Highway at mile post 42.5 (McKay Creek), and mile post 57.3 (Davidson’s Ditch) or the Elliot Highway at mile post 27.7 (Wickersham Dome) and mile post 57.1 (Colorado Creek Trailhead). A brochure to the area, and off highway vehicle usage and limitations are included in the links below.

Weather conditions in the White Mountains are extremely unpredictable, and a lack of inversion could result in temperatures 25 degrees colder than Fairbanks. Dress appropriately, and pack as if you plan to spend the night.
Strict adherence to COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. Masks will be warn whenever a distance of six feet cannot be maintained. Due to the current situation, we will not meet at a specified location in order to avoid large gatherings. Individuals new to the outdoors will be paired with someone that has experience in the Alaska outdoors. Send pics of your successful hunts and packed out trash to the POC below.
This is a free event for BHA AFI members. Individuals that are not members can sign up at the link below.
