The Arizona Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers kicked off the new year with a unique conservation project to give discarded Christmas trees new life as fish habitat in Saguaro Lake. On Jan. 9, AZ BHA volunteers in partnership with the Arizona Department of Game and the Tonto National Forest tied cinderblocks to trees, loaded them on a pontoon and strategically sunk them to provide structure to an otherwise flat, sandy bottom. The lake is home to largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and while the bass population isn’t booming, when anglers do hook one there’s a chance it’s a 10-14 pound fish. Many thanks to our conservation partners for allowing BHA members to help improve fish habitat and fishing opportunity in Saguaro Lake.
