Darren Bruning & Wood Bison Reintroduction in Alaska:
PHOTO: ADF&G
Darren Bruning is a prominent figure in wildlife conservation, known for his extensive work with various species, particularly his significant role in restoring wood bison to Alaska. Since arriving in 2011 as the area biologist in Delta Junction—home to Alaska's largest plains bison herd—Bruning has been instrumental in wildlife health, habitat protection, and numerous restoration projects. His efforts in reintroducing wood bison, a species absent from Alaska for over a century, aim to establish self-sustaining populations and contribute to global conservation initiatives. Bruning’s expertise in wildlife care has been crucial for the successful preparation and transport of wood bison, including a new herd released this summer. His work highlights the importance of valuing wildlife within ecosystems, positioning Alaska as a leader in species recovery. Interested individuals can learn more about his contributions and the status of wood bison at the upcoming Alaska BHA Beer Dinner on October 26th at Forbidden Peak.
