Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi members, make sure to mark February 14th and 15th off on your calendar. The Southeast Chapter will be hosting a tri state squirrel hunt that weekend in the Bienville National Forest and surrounding WMAs (Bienville, Caney Creek, and Talahalla) outside of Morton, MS. Join us for some food, fun, and fellowship. They say one of the best ways to introduce a new hunter to hunting is through small game, so be sure to bring a beginner so they can get their feet wet hunting some of Mississippi's creek bottoms for squirrels.
Friday night at 6pm we will be hosting a pot luck supper in Roosevelt State Park at Pavilion 1. Feel free to bring your own dish of choice.
Saturday morning we will meet up in the parking lot of the Texaco at 2582 Old Hwy 13 S, Morton, MS 39117 at 6am. From there we will split up and head off into the woods in pursuit of squirrel, rabbit, and any other game that may be in season. We'll reconvene at Roosevelt State Park at the same pavilion for burgers at lunch before heading back out for another round.
There are plenty of lodging options nearby. Roosevelt State Park in Morton has cabins, primitive camping, and even hotel rooms. There are primitive campsites around Marathon Lake and the Shockaloe trail closer to Forest, MS. There are also a few hotel options in the town of Forest.
Please RSVP if you will be attending so we will know how many people to prepare for. If you plan to hunt, be sure to purchase a WMA permit along with your license so that you can take advantage of the local Wildlife Management Areas.
