AFI Event Review (North Carolina Upland Hunting Class)

2021 North Carolina Upland 101 Dual Skills Camp

AFI Leader Marty Bartram:

“This event was a challenge as we were trying to teach Upland fundamentals in a part of the country with a real niche upland habitat.”

AFI participant Hunter Owen:

“I had no idea there were upland opportunities so close to Fort Bragg. Chasing ruffed Grouse in the mountains feels like a whole different game than the pheasants on Fort Reilly, Kansas.”

AFI Volunteer Cooper Akin:

“I knew I was interested in an upland dog before this event and had my heart set on pointers, but seeing the setter breed inaction may have stolen my heart.”

Participant:

This was a super well done event. I loved watching the dogs work and learning about the various breeds and how their natural characteristics aid them in the pursuit of upland game. I've always thought about chasing Quail or ruffed grouse, but I never had the "know-how" or the first idea of where to start. At this event, not only did I gain an understanding of how to choose a bird dog and how a bird dog can help you in the field, but also why Quail and ruffed grouse are struggling in North Carolina and what groups like BHA and ruffed grouse society are doing to affect habitat and public access.

About Trevor Hubbs

I grew up running hounds on coyotes and raccoons, spent a fair amount of time public land waterfowl hunting, and have hunted upland birds behind my setters across the midwest.
