Learn to hunt Caribou event Alaska, 2023.
When you get stationed in Alaska, it's easy to think that your world of leaving the base is over. What you imagine is this snowy hellscape because that's all you hear about from guys who have been stationed in Alaska. I grew up hunting in the Southeast and never thought twice about trying to hunt while I was stationed in Alaska.
I cannot think David made enough for inviting me on this learn to hunt Caribou dual skills camp hosted by BHA. Growing up Whitetail hunting. Caribou is always something that I imagined only wealthy folks who could afford a float plane trip could do. Yet I was on the whole road, floating on a wild and scenic river, getting ready to chase this amazing creature.
The amount of information provided at this event was staggering. Despite what David had told me, I thought it would just be a go-hunting Caribou trip with all expenses paid. However, the classes on identification caribou conservation, the status of the Ambler Road, and the Central Yukon resource management plan were incredible.
I had no idea this resource was readily available to me and what an important part I could play in this fight. David May is an amazing leader, and I can not thank him enough.
