Once again, we're partnering with the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation for a weeklong horse-assisted backcountry trails project deep into the Great Bear Wilderness! (Check out the recap from last year!)
Open to current BHA members only, up to eight public land owners will meet a Crew Leader Saturday morning in Hungry Horse and caravan the hour drive to the trailhead. After sorting gear and supplies for the packer and shouldering your backpack, you will hike the 14 miles into camp (it's a big hike, but remember that the pack string will carry the heaviest gear). Basecamp will be on the Wild and Scenic Upper Middle Fork of the Flathead, one of Montana’s premier wilderness rivers, deep in the the Great Bear Wilderness.
Sunday through Thursday, the crew will be working on trail #214, conducting basic trail maintenance and clearing downed trees. Crosscut saws, pulaskis, shovels and hand saws will be the tools of choice. After putting in some sweat equity, we'll spend the evenings relaxing (ie fishing ) down at the river. There will be a full day off mid week to explore the area or just focus on fishing. Friday the group will pack up and hike back out to the trailhead and civilization.
All food, tools and group gear will be provided. For a personal pack list and other helpful information, click here.
