This year we are adding a new component to our yearly work in the form of a turkey habitat project. As part of an ongoing study with Tennessee Tech, GPS data shows that many turkey hens have limited suitable habitat in areas where they nest and have suffered losses of entire broods of poults. Researchers and KDFWR staff have identified areas in the Sinclair unit in which we hope to improve habitat and therefore improve brood success. The focus of our work on National Public Lands Day will be a hack & squirt project to remove midstory canopy cover, allowing more sunlight to penetrate the forest floor and promoting growth of vegetation which will provide food and cover for turkeys along with various other wildlife species. Then, based on data from this year's hens we can identify how successful our work has been, and where to focus next year. KDFWR staff will provide equipment and protective gear, however you may consider also bringing your own hatchet to use if available.
Over the past few years, we've made a considerable impact on Peabody WMA and we're excited to continue this tradition by adding this much needed habitat work! We encourage you to RSVP below and be sure to invite your friends and family to join!
