Alberta Halts Irresponsible Coal MiningAlberta BHA helped halt two coal mines that would have diminished waterways in Canada and the U.S. by pressuring federal and local administrators to reconsider the proposals.

Military Collaborations Help BighornsBHA AFI members and California chapter members helped endangered desert bighorn sheep by working together to build guzzlers – which are maintained with help from the U.S. Marines.

Keeping the Outdoors Accessible…for AllMore than $30,000 was raised in 2021 for BHA’s new Aidan Long Outdoors for All Scholarship Fund, which is dedicated to BHA’s mission of making the outdoors accessible for everyone.

Investments in InfrastructurePassed into law in 2021 following strong support by BHA, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is the U.S.’s largest-ever investment in infrastructure and included $20.8 billion for BHA-supported conservation goals.

State and Tribal Species ConservationThe Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, a BHA policy priority, was introduced in both chambers of Congress in 2021. RAWA would secure $1.3 billion in annual dedicated funding for states and an additional $97.5 million for tribes for at-risk species. BHA members sent over 7,000 messages supporting RAWA to Congress.

CWD Research GainsIn 2021, the House passed the Chronic Wasting Disease Research and Management Act with a bipartisan vote of 393-33. BHA and other hunting groups support the legislation, which would fund coordinated management between USDA and state agencies, authorizing $70 million over seven years, as well as CWD research and educational programs.

Arctic Habitat ConservationThe Interior Department suspended oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge following its moratorium on new leasing in the refuge. These decisions heed the calls of BHA and our partners, who have urged decision-makers to utilize best available science and avoid development in sensitive habitat across Alaska’s Arctic.

A New Generation of Conservation LeadersBHA’s intern program made big leaps in 2021, doubling our footprint in the last year. BHA interns tackle work organization-wide, including launching our new Action Map, fulfilling orders in our new in-house merchandise center, and helping plan events like BHA’s North American Rendezvous.
