The British Columbia Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers was established in February of 2014 to become the first official international chapter of BHA.
The following dedicated conservationists came forward to make up our first executive board of directors:
Bill Hanlon, Chair, Sparwood
Aden Stewart, Secretary, Cranbrook
Sam Medcalf, Treasurer, Sparwood
Allen McEwan, Director, Pemberton
Corey Phelps, Director, Creston
Mike Hawkridge, Director, Quesnel
Rick Loughery, Director, Vernon
Although the initiative to join BHA developed in the East Kootenay region of BC, we have regional representation from around our enormous province. There is no better place in the world to be a hunter or angler than British Columbia.
Although we have abundant opportunity to go afield every day of the year, it is not only this quantity of opportunity we need to maintain. We need to maintain quality, wild opportunity. Opportunity with challenge, solitude, effort, peace and quiet, and wildness where we can get away from industrial activities and industrial strength recreation of our motorized society. Where wilderness is still the pristine legacy of nature. Where we can chase after childhood dreams of monster bulls, bucks and rams in mountains still wild.
We liked the BHA message and BHA's articulate way of expressing concerns for our wild public lands. This is why BC sportsmen joined BHA. Our membership has continued to grow, and we are now approaching 70 members. We host a general meeting at the Heritage Inn in Cranbrook on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Meeting attendance has been encouraging and averages 20 to 25 members each meeting. The BC chapter has hosted the Hunting Film Tour for two years now, and it has become our annual fundraiser and membership event.
Our chapter continues to grow, and we look forward to sharing BHA’s strong conservation message to the backcountry hunters and anglers of British Columbia.
