BHA Family Campout
White Mountains, AZ
July 21-23, 2017
From the Show Low area:
Take highway 260 southeast from Show Low through Pinetop and McNary to highway 273 (the road to Sunrise). Turn right (south) towards Big Lake. Keep going past Sunrise Lake, White Mountain Reservoir, Sheep’s Crossing, the turnoff to Lee Valley Reservoir and Gabaldon Campground turnoff. On the left side of the highway there is the turnoff for the FS 409 road. It’s right across from the Gabaldon road. There will be signs at the turnoff and from that point on. Depending on camp spot availability the camp with be either within ½ mile from the pavement to a mile. The FS 409 road is dirt
From the East and southeast (Safford, Alpine)
Take highway 191 north from Alpine to FS 249 road on the left (west). Follow FS 249 westerly to Big Lake. Pick up the FS 113 road at Big Lake continuing northwesterly past Crescent Lake until the junction of the FS 409 road with the 113. Turn right (north). There will be signs at the turnoff and from that point on. The chosen campsite will depend on site availability and will be from ½ mile to 1 mile in. The FS 409 road is dirt.
From Springerville
Go west on highway 260 until the junction of 261. Turn left (south) on 261 and follow it towards Big Lake. When you reach the highway 273 junction turn right (westerly) and continue until the junction of FS 409 road which is across from the Gabaldon turnoff. Turn right (north) on the 409. There will be signs at the turnoff and from that point on. The 409 road is dirt.
Extra Information:
During this time of year there is a probability to rain in the afternoons.
The altitude is about 9200 feet so it will be cool at nights (cold for flatlanders).
There is both lake and stream fishing within 10-20 minutes from camp.
There are also established trails in the area. Some that go into the Baldy Wilderness.
If there are enough interested kids we may plan a crayfish catching trip and cook up the catch one evening.
Those interested can participate in organized or not organized archery at the camp. There may be archery equipment for kids.
There will be a communal fire at night (depending on the weather) where many stories (some true) will be told as well as trading tidbits of info on hiking, fishing and hunting in the Arizona backcountry.
